Conspiracy Theory

The most recent theory of Malaysia Flight 370 was that it purposefully avoided detection from Indonesian airspace when it was flying on March 8th, 2014. As of yesterday, experts believe the Boeing 777 ended up in the southern Indian Ocean because of the debris field that showed up on satellite images.

Based off the last communication from the cockpit of Flight 370, the plane was just north of Malaysia. Shortly after, the plane was piloted deliberately around northern Indonesia instead of flying over the county. Aviation specialist, Peter Goelz, confirmed that the actions in the cockpit were deliberate and would have required planning and could not have been done on the spur of the moment. What once was considerate a terrorist act is now being seen as an inside job. The focus of the investigation has been shifted to the flight crew because of this deliberate piloting over Indonesia.

Recently, a senior Malaysian government source that the plane intentionally was taken along a route designed to avoid radar detection. This bring Malaysia's involvement into question. If a government is saying that this was purposely devised to stay off the radar, maybe Malaysia had a different final destination than Beijing.

There has been a lot of criticism and response from Malaysia regarding the loss of the flight, including contradicting statements about potentially dangerous lithium batteries on board, contradictions of the prime minister's account, and falsified voice communications.

Many of the conspiracy theories can be found here and here .

Overall, I think that people always jump to conclusions and point the finger at innocent people just to try and reason out a tragedy like the disappearance of Malaysia Flight 370. Whether it be two men with stolen passports, or the Malaysian government, it will most likely never be proved what actually happened to this flight. I think that conspiracy theories are interesting, and I can almost convince myself that they are true, but the reality of the situation is that a disappearance like this does not go unnoticed and people will continue digging for information until the truth is discovered or they give up.

  1. I am obsessed with conspiracy theories about this plane because I just cannot understand HOW anyone loses an entire airplane. It is really beyond me. I know Malaysia says they are doing all they can, but there has to be something missing. At the same time, I think it is reasonable to believe that the people on the plane are dead, so is there really a point to looking for the plane anymore? Sorry for the absolute insensitivity here. But, I'm sure the search is costing hundreds of millions of dollars, and I don't know if it is even feasible to actually find the plane anymore. I know these families deserve closure, but at all costs? I suppose life has the greatest value of all, and if my sister or parents were on that plane, I'd be out searching myself, but still it's a hard choice to make. I will be interested to see how long the search continues until the authorities officially call it off, which I really hope doesn't happen. It's such a tragedy, but it frustrates me to think we will probably never know what happened.

  2. Part of me does not understand why people are still freaking out over this plane disappearance. I find it a bit ridiculous that people in this country think that we can and should have everything figured out. With our smart phones and our airplanes and our Keurigs, we think we are on top of the world- so advanced that we cannot possibly have anything left to figure out. Yes, I think it is terrible that a plane went missing, and it is sure strange, but sometimes unexplainable things happen in life, and I am okay with that. In fact, in the case of this missing plane, I rather like the idea that no one can figure it out. It shows that there is still some mystery left in the world, and it lets people know that we are not as perfectly knowledgeable as we seem to think we are.

  3. I agree that people have jumped to point fingers in this scenario. What I don't understand is why they have decided that it was a terrorist event. Terrorism implies using fear to progress a certain ideal or demand some sort of power. But no one has taken responsibility for the disappearance so a cover up theory seems more likely.

I think this event points to our distrust of media and government in the modern era of 24-hour news channels which present evidence consistently contradicted by wikileaks. We assume that a conspiracy has taken place because this type of failure has become more common than a technological failure that could keep us from tracking their location.
